Spy Shots: Twin-turbo M5 and M7 prototypes

Will the M5 get a twin-turbo and be joined by an M7? Mr. Lehmann and Co. have caught an M5 and a 7-Series with extra ventage. It’s hypothesized that Audi has understated the RS6’s pony count, telling the world it’s 580 when it’s actually 600. And now with both Mercedes and Audi outdoing the M in the horsepower war, the theory is that that’s an insult BMW simply cannot allow. Hence the addition of double-barrel blowers to equalize the equation.

As for the possibility of an M7, all there is to see are a large scoop at the front of the hood and two smaller scoops at the rear. With years of AMG S-Classes and Audi S8’s behind us, if there is an M7 on the way, all we can say is: it’s about time.

BMW becomes world’s biggest-selling premium automaker

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:59 pm

BMW outdid compatriots Mercedes and Audi to sell the most cars in August, taking the cake with the number one spot and probably the Benjamins as well. Compared to Audi’s 66,400 cars and Mercedes’ (and smart’s) 96,200, BMW (with MINI) rolled 99,755 cars off dealer lots.

BMW couldn’t have done it without the success of the MINI, and we can debate whether it’s fair to include it in a shootout. Minus the little British lifestyle accessory, BMW only moved 85,003 units. Nevertheless, as long as its in there, it bodes well for the blue-and-white propeller, with the X5 and MINI (which is up 24%) still doing very well. All three makers have new and refreshed models on the way shortly, but BMW also has the brand new — and certain to be popular — volume-selling 1-Series and MINI Clubman in the works.

And not that they will add too much to the tally, but while we’re throwing things in, there’s the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe that will probably outsell Maybach all by itself. If it isn’t already, the question soon will be: can you get too much BMW?

Mercedes considers using next MINI platform for new compacts

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:59 pm

If Automotive News‘ sources are to be believed, BMW and Mercedes-Benz might be joining forces to develop a new front-wheel drive architecture that would underpin both automakers’ compact offerings. BMW is likely in the process of developing a new platform for its MINI and Mercedes has already announced plans to ditch its A-class ultra-compact. The idea that the two rivals would come together to co-develop a product might seem preposterous, but at the end of the day, it’s all about saving as many euros as possible.

If a joint effort does take place, expect Mercedes to use its own powertrains for two compact vehicles, likely new A- and B-classes. And no, Chrysler isn’t in the running to help out.

Indulge your Germanic car lust now, prices expect to rise

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:59 pm

With the U.S. dollar’s decline against the euro, the Wall Street Journal’s crystal ball gazers have determined that the price of vehicles shipped over from the old world are set to rise in the next year. European manufacturers have been able to lock exchange rates by buying contracts that keep currency fluctuations at bay, but for some automakers abroad, that’s about to change. Those contracts are set to expire soon, and that means either prices will rise or European automakers will have to begin producing their wares in the Land of the Free.

Profitability may be sustained in the short term by BMW and Mercedes, as U.S.-built products are used as a tourniquet to slow the financial bleed. Volkswagen is supposedly in good shape through next year, but the idea of building more vehicles here in the States has been mentioned numerous times. Plus, there’s always the option of building in China, something that’s inevitable given the “flat” world in which we’re living.

Mercedes eyeing motors from MINI

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:59 pm

Just because BMW declined Mercedes’ public offering to develop engines together doesn’t mean that the 3-pointed star and the roundel can’t work together at all. Mercedes has a B-Class car arriving in 2011, and it needs motors. BMW and Peugeot have developed 4-cylinder direct injection lumps that power the MINI, and Mercedes is eying the cutting edge powerplants for its new compact car.

The new B-Class would take the place of the current A- and B-Class cars cars, and come in five flavors: 3-door, 5-door, SUV, coupe, and convertible. BMW announced just this month that it would be ending its partnership with Peugeot on those engines, so it is unclear how Mercedes would get them in 4 years time. Regardless, Mercedes is due to make a decision about what powers the new B-class by next month.

On again, off again: BMW and Daimler may enter engine partnership

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:00 pm

It’s been rumored for some time and the newest comments from BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer is further proof that the propeller people are looking to get in bed with other automakers to cut the high costs of engine development and production.

This isn’t a first for BMW, which partnered with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen on the engine for the current crop of MINI models, but this newest endeavor could involve one of Bimmer’s biggest rivals, Daimler. Mercedes is in need of small, four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines for its next line of A- and B-class vehicles, and the MINI’s mill could be a good fit. The talks aren’t exclusive with BMW, however, as Daimler is also sitting down with unnamed Japanese manufacturers to provide petrol and diesel powerplants.

Mercedes/BMW collaboration gaining steam

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:00 pm

Reports out of Munich are that BMW and Mercedes will be getting very cozy when it comes to cooperation. Earlier this year, Mercedes said “nein” to some sort of tie-up with BMW, even as Daimler was eying MINI motors for its upcoming A- and B-Class cars. Unnamed sources, though, have told the Financial Times Deutschland that BMW and Mercedes are not only looking at cooperating on engines, but they could also be open to developing assemblies like “axles, steering gear or drive systems.”

BMW is being driven by the desire to cut costs. One can only assume that Mercedes, for all of its protestations, has the same thing in mind. Every carmaker is coming out with a raft of smaller cars to serve multiple purposes, among them: meet CO2 emissions and CAFE standards, put on a green face on for the public, and, of course, increase volume by selling more inexpensive vehicles.

While we’re sure consumers would like to imagine each maker bringing its own technology — and specifically, intangible brand feel — to its vehicles, the business case cries out for closer cooperation for economies of scale. We aren’t sure yet how BMW and Mercedes will be joining up, but we’re pretty sure that they’ll be doing so in some substantial way soon enough.
