Spy Shots: BMW M3 CSL testing?

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:59 pm

Our friend Jason tipped us off to several photos at M3post.com, purportedly showing a prototype of the E92 M3 CSL making the rounds at the ‘Ring. While we’re not entirely convinced that this particular mule is the CSL, some cues, like the ducktail spoiler and what appears to be a wider track, make us think thrice.

If it is the M3 CSL, which BMW has practically admitted is coming, expect it to drop a few pounds and come equipped with more track-friendly accoutrements. Realtor’s wives need not apply.

Spy Shots: BMW M3 sedan and convertible caught

Where do BMW fans go on vacation? The ‘Ring, of course. If you’re taking that type of jaunt, you’d be forgiven for leaving your pants at home, but should you neglect to pack the zoom lens, woe unto you. With the E92 M3 arriving in the hungry driveways of customers, the Bayerische wizards are readying sedan and cabriolet versions of the M3, and a quick New Jersey BMW enthusiast snapped the cars near the Eifel mountain’s most famous attraction. The sedan’s looks don’t improve, and the 3-series cabrio is already the best looking car they’ve currently got, so there’s nothing outwardly earth-shattering about the new flavors of M3. Performance-wise, though, the four door and floptop flavors of the M3 will share the palpitation-inducing abilities of the coupe, and let’s not forget about the upcoming CSL, which sheds weight and ups the ante. More variants of the uber-3 equals more fun for everyone. We’re holding out for a wagon, so the whole family can don helmets and go rippin’ around.

Spy Shots: Mystery MINI mule a MINI Moke?

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:00 pm

Could it be true? Could there be an as-yet-unheard-of MINI variant added to the pile? Spy pics of some yellow beastly thing wearing a MINI front and rear have a few folks wondering if MINI might make a Moke. The original MINI Moke from the sixties was an offroad vehicle that Alec Issigonis was trying to sell to the military. We doubt BMW would have any such aims for a Moke revival, but at the very least it could be a much more capable four-wheeler than the Crossman/Monte looks like it’s going to be. A “possible retractable hard-top convertible, or a stripped down, open-air speedster variant,” and even the possibility of a small truck bed have been thrown into the guessing game basket. Or, as ever, it could just be a test mule and mean nothing at all. But knowing MINI, we doubt it. Oh, and BMW might also want to change the car’s name: moke means a dull or boring person, a donkey, or an old, broken-down horse.

Spy Shots: Baby Rolls nabbed

Wednesday 31 December 1969 @ 6:00 pm

Hours upon hours of lying prone on the frozen tundra of the Arctic Circle have paid off for KGP’s hardcore spy shooters. An upright test mule has been spotted running around at BMW’s facility in the frozen hinterlands. There have been rumors of a smaller Roller swirling about, and these shots seem to support the conjecture. BMW’s 7-series will reportedly serve as the basis for the new luxury whip, and the car in the photos appears identical to the surrounding 7’s from the A-pillar back. The stiff upper lip has likely been grafted on to facilitate cooling and airflow for the engine room. Plus, you could do worse than an E65 with a better schnoz and an old-world interior. Check out all five spy shots in the gallery below.
